New Space for Parents to Connect with Their Babies in Privacy at NYU Langone

NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island Unveils Innovative Family Care Suite for New Parents

In a significant enhancement to its maternal care services, NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island has opened a state-of-the-art 8,500-square-foot family care suite, designed to provide new parents with a private and supportive environment to rest and bond with their newborns. This modern facility, which officially opened on October 21, features ten private rooms equipped with amenities that cater to the needs of families, marking a progressive shift in the hospital’s policy regarding maternal care.

“This beautiful new space creates a warm and supportive environment for new families to recover from delivery and prepare for their transition home,” stated Dr. Erika Banks, the chair of OBGYN at NYU Langone Hospital. The newly established suite aims to ensure that all patients have access to individual recovery rooms at no additional fee, eliminating the previous policy that required new mothers to pay for a private room. Under the former system, mothers often shared rooms, limiting their ability to bond with family during a crucial period.

Dr. Banks emphasized, “It wasn’t an exorbitant fee, but it was a way to give women options that we believed should be accessible to all. We are thrilled to provide equitable and excellent care for all women at no extra cost.” This new direction aligns with the hospital’s mission to prioritize family-centric care in its maternity services.

The family care suite boasts modern conveniences designed for comfort and privacy. Each room includes a convertible couch for overnight family members, additional seating, an en-suite bathroom, large windows letting in natural light, and a television. This thoughtful design addresses the needs of families, enabling them to celebrate their new addition in a comfortable setting rather than crowded hospital lobbies.

Moreover, in addition to comfort, the rooms offer a wealth of educational resources. Parents can access information on breastfeeding, childcare, and potential postpartum challenges during their stay. Dr. Banks noted, “The suite includes educational materials that help prepare parents for their new roles and inform them about whom to contact for support after returning home.” The hospital also provides instructional classes led by nursing staff to further assist new parents.

The reimagined space has replaced a former conference room, a project that hospital administration and staff had long envisioned. Reflecting on the initiative, Dr. Banks remarked, “This development has injected new energy into our commitment to improving maternity care and provision for families, addressing the unique challenges encountered during this life transition.”

NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island has positioned itself as a leader in maternal healthcare on Long Island, being the only facility in the region designated an Advanced Perinatal Center of Excellence by the Joint Commission. This recognition underscores the hospital’s commitment to offering exceptional care for mothers and infants both during and after the birthing process.

Located at 259 First Street in Mineola, NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island continues to set high standards in delivering comprehensive, family-oriented healthcare, reaffirming its dedication to supporting new families during one of life’s most transformative experiences.
