Newly Admitted Nursing Students Celebrate Induction Ceremony

Indiana University Kokomo Celebrates New Class of Nursing Students in Traditional Induction Ceremony

Kokomo, Indiana — Indiana University Kokomo recently welcomed its newest cohort of nursing students during a traditional induction ceremony held on January 15 at the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions (SNAHP). This significant event marks a pivotal moment in the lives of aspiring health care professionals, as they embark on a journey toward becoming registered nurses.

During the ceremony, Assistant Dean Stephanie Pratt addressed the students and their families, emphasizing the profound impact that nursing professionals can have on patients’ lives. “With this gift, you will make a difference, do great things, change lives, and even save lives,” Pratt stated, highlighting the deep sense of purpose that accompanies the nursing vocation. She articulated the unique privilege and responsibility of serving others, underscoring the transformative nature of the work.

Interim Dean Carolyn Townsend echoed Pratt’s sentiments, describing nursing as both a challenging and “profoundly rewarding path.” In her welcoming remarks, Townsend reminded the students that nursing goes further than choosing a career: it requires a blend of clinical expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of others. Townsend assured the students that throughout their academic journey, they would be equipped with the essential skills, knowledge, and values to significantly impact the lives of patients and their families.

Students will engage in hands-on labs, learn from experienced faculty, and participate in real-world clinical settings, all designed to prepare them for high-quality patient care. Townsend also urged the new students to immerse themselves in campus life, which provides opportunities for personal and professional growth, and reminded them of the support available from faculty, staff, and fellow classmates.

Nursing lecturer Heather Woody addressed the families present, urging them to become steadfast cheerleaders for their nursing students. “Nursing school isn’t easy, but it is rewarding,” Woody reminded the audience, emphasizing the crucial role of familial support as students embark on demanding yet fulfilling paths.

The ceremony included a ceremonial presentation of certificates, with each student donning the distinctive red scrubs that mark their status as IU Kokomo nursing students for the first time. Additionally, the new students recited the Nursing Pledge, a solemn vow to uphold the ethical standards of the nursing profession. The Indiana Nurse Honor Guard also participated, adding to the significance of the occasion.

New inductees, who were selected through a rigorous acceptance process, hailed from various towns, including Anderson, Kokomo, Indianapolis, and Westfield, among others. The event celebrated the commitment to education and service embodied by these emerging health care professionals.

“Education is KEY at Indiana University Kokomo,” an institution dedicated to fostering the next generation of skilled and compassionate nurses ready to meet the health care demands of tomorrow.
