Greater Scranton YMCA Hosts Clothing Drive to Alleviate Financial Strain for Local Families
Dunmore, PA — As the cost of living continues to rise, many families find themselves increasingly burdened by expenses. In response to this growing challenge, the Greater Scranton YMCA has initiated a clothing drive designed to provide much-needed assistance to local families struggling under financial constraints.
A recent visit to the YMCA revealed a unique atmosphere — patrons were not there primarily for exercise routines, but rather to procure clothing donations that aim to mitigate the impact of tight household budgets. Among those browsing the offerings was a mother in search of outfits for her child, representing a common scenario among attendees seeking to find practical solutions amidst rising costs.
Tressa Capoccia, the Senior Education Director at the Greater Scranton YMCA, noted that the decision to offer a clothing drive was prompted by requests from families affiliated with the YMCA’s early learning center. “We had a couple of families that came and asked us if we ever received donations, and I thought: if there’s a need and we can help, why not try?” Capoccia remarked, indicating a proactive approach to community support.
The clothing drive features a diverse selection of items, including men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing. Community members have expressed overwhelming gratitude for such resources. One attendee highlighted the value of the drive, stating, “This is great that we have a resource like this for the community, and I’m grateful that we can come and take advantage of that.”
The initiative has garnered significant participation, attributed to pre-event outreach and the generosity of donors. Meghan Carnevale, the Mission Advancement and Marketing Director, underscored the pressing need for assistance. “We serve numerous children in our early childhood education department, and many of those families receive financial assistance. Consequently, we are aware that they require winter clothing such as coats, warm pants, and sweatshirts,” Carnevale explained.
Importantly, participation in the clothing drive is not limited to YMCA members. Individuals in need are encouraged to visit the facility and stop at the welcome center, where staff will direct them to the clothing drive. “If you indicate you are here for the clothing drive, they’ll assist you in finding the necessary resources quickly,” Carnevale added.
For those unable to attend the initial event, the YMCA is offering another opportunity on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Organizers also expressed plans to host additional clothing drives throughout the year, aiming to bolster community support in these challenging economic times.
This initiative exemplifies the YMCA’s commitment to addressing local needs and fostering community resilience, ensuring that families have access to essential resources as they navigate the complexities of modern-day financial pressures.
