Port Richmond Library Reopens After Extensive Renovation, Promising Enhanced Community Engagement
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Port Richmond Library, an integral branch of the New York Public Library (NYPL), is set to reopen its doors on February 24, following a comprehensive renovation that reimagines the historic space as a modern community hub.
Established in 1905, the Port Richmond Library is one of several Carnegie libraries in New York City, financed by the renowned philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The renovation, which began in 2021 after initial announcements in 2017, has transformed the library to better serve a diverse community. Located at 75 Bennett Street, the library is expected to fulfill its mission to provide educational resources and programming to local families.
During a recent preview, David Lem, NYPL’s vice president for capital planning and construction, highlighted the balance between modern functionality and the library’s historic charm. “We’re offering the community a newly revitalized, modern library that still holds on to the old historic fabric of the building,” Lem stated, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that library services remain relevant in the 21st century.
The renovation incorporated several significant upgrades aimed at enhancing accessibility and user experience. New features include updated areas designated for children, teenagers, and adults; multi-purpose rooms equipped for various programs and classes; and an elevator along with ramps to improve accessibility for all visitors. Upgraded technology and infrastructure were also key components of the initiative.
Lem noted the versatility of the space, designed to accommodate users of all ages. “Everyone has their own areas that they can enjoy,” he remarked. “That’s the critical aspect of our goal: to create an inviting environment conducive to learning and community engagement.”
The redesigned children’s area presents a welcoming atmosphere that encourages family participation in activities like homework help and science programs. The teen area has expanded significantly, catering to the diverse interests of young adults, providing them with a safe space to explore their identities beyond the confines of home or school.
Moreover, the renovation included the transformation of an unused third floor, which previously served as living quarters for a librarian. This addition speaks to the library’s commitment to expanding communal resources and ensuring that every inch of the space contributes to the library’s mission.
The reopening of the Port Richmond Library follows a tumultuous period of uncertainty related to city budget cuts proposed earlier this year. Nevertheless, the library received crucial funding reinstated in the Fiscal Year 2025 budget, allowing it to proceed with its scheduled reopening. Councilmember Kamillah Hanks played a pivotal role in securing an additional million for the NYPL system, highlighting the importance of libraries as community anchors.
Hanks remarked, “As a kid, I lost myself in libraries. It’s essential this generation embraces the resource we have in our libraries, which are alive and well.” She emphasized the vital role of libraries in fostering imagination and learning among youth.
The newly renovated Port Richmond Library will operate Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This reopening marks not just a restoration of a cherished community resource but also a commitment to ongoing support for public libraries amid changing financial landscapes.
