Cedar Falls, Iowa – Community Engagement and Biodiversity Awareness through UNI’s Second Annual BioBlitz
The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Department of Biology is poised to host its second annual BioBlitz on Saturday, September 13, coinciding with UNI’s Family Weekend. This engaging, free event is tailored for families, students, alumni, and members of the Cedar Falls community, promoting an exploration of the diverse ecosystems that the university’s campus has to offer.
Scheduled to take place at the Daryl Smith Prairie, located at 720 W 29th St. in Cedar Falls, the BioBlitz will run from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. This year’s event promises an array of interactive and educational activities designed for attendees of all ages. Participants will have the unique opportunity to engage with and observe a multitude of species, including small mammals, birds, insects, bats, and native plant life. With the guidance of UNI biology faculty and staff, participants can appreciate firsthand the beauty and complexity of local biodiversity.
A central aspect of the BioBlitz involves the documentation of species encountered during the event. Participants will contribute their observations to the iNaturalist UNI Preserve, a global database that plays a crucial role in tracking and protecting biodiversity. This initiative not only enriches the scientific community but also fosters a deeper connection between individuals and their natural surroundings.
Reflecting on last year’s turnout, Ai Wen, associate professor in the UNI Department of Biology and event organizer, expressed optimism: “Last year’s BioBlitz drew more than 60 participants, and we’re excited to see even more families join us this year. It’s a wonderful way to connect people of all ages with the natural world right here on campus.” This enthusiastic response underscores UNI’s commitment to fostering community engagement and promoting hands-on learning.
The BioBlitz serves as a pivotal opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in nature, enhancing awareness of the vital roles various species play in their ecosystems. Moreover, it aligns with UNI’s broader mission to provide valuable educational experiences outside of the traditional classroom setting.
