Curebound Cancer Challenge Launches at UC San Diego to Accelerate Life-Saving Cancer Research

Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion Honors Philanthropy as UC San Diego Hosts Curebound Cancer Challenge

The Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion, a newly named facility within UC San Diego Health’s La Jolla campus, stands as a testament to the Koman family’s enduring commitment to enhancing healthcare in San Diego. This dedication was recently formalized when Bill and Amy Koman were awarded the prestigious 2023 Chancellor’s Medal, an honor that underscores exceptional service in support of the mission of UC San Diego.

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla, reflecting on the event, stated, “As a destination for the entire region, UC San Diego is pleased to welcome the Curebound Cancer Challenge to campus, and most importantly, unite with Curebound’s bold mission to cure cancer. Thanks to visionary supporters like Bill and Amy Koman and the entire Curebound organization, we can accelerate life-saving research, including the work at UC San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center, and bring hope to families affected by this disease.”

The Curebound Cancer Challenge, scheduled to take place along the scenic Torrey Pines coastline, will feature a selection of challenging bike routes—25, 50, and 75 miles—allowing participants to pedal past key research facilities where funds raised contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in cancer treatment. This initiative not only promotes physical fitness but also reinforces the importance of community involvement in the fight against cancer.

For those who prefer activities outside of cycling, the event offers additional options, including a 5K walk, a newly introduced 10K run, and engaging spin classes lasting 50 minutes. In addition, participants can enjoy a variety of entertainment and family-friendly activities at the team village, a space designed for fundraising teams to gather and reflect on their achievements. The event will culminate in a celebratory kickoff party the night before, fostering a sense of community among participants.

“Curebound is thrilled to have increased participation by UC San Diego and its community members this year,” remarked Bill Koman. He highlighted the transformative changes on the UC San Diego campus, which may inspire first-time visitors, showcasing new housing and academic facilities that reflect the institution’s growth and prominence. As UC San Diego evolves into a central hub for adjacent research institutions, the potential for collaboration and innovation in the field of cancer research is significant.

As the Curebound Cancer Challenge approaches, the enthusiasm among participants, benefactors, and the local community underscores a collective commitment to advancing cancer research and improving patient outcomes. The event not only serves as a fundraising effort but also as a celebration of collective determination against one of the greatest health challenges of our time.
