Lamternshtick Initiative Brings Chanukah Light to Crown Heights Families
The Lamternshtick initiative, aimed at providing support to Anash families in Crown Heights, has achieved notable success since its inception. Situated in the distinctive Raskin’s Fish alleyway, this unofficial pop-up shop has quickly become a hub for families looking to engage in meaningful Chanukah observances. Participants are offered a range of essential Chanukah supplies, including menorah kits, candles, and guides that outline family-friendly routes for public Chanukah celebrations. This initiative aligns with the teachings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who urged his followers to act as “lamplighters,” spreading the warmth and light of Chanukah to everyone in the community.
Lamternshtick was conceived as a response to the desire for greater participation in mivtzoim—outreach activities—during the holiday season. The initiative seeks to empower Crown Heights families by streamlining the process of engaging in these important customs. The organization emphasizes the practicality and organization that is often needed for families to carry out these mitzvot (commandments) with dignity. Participants can dedicate their time to enjoy the holiday while Lamternshtick handles logistical aspects, including the provision of menorahs, donuts, and curated lists of local Jewish families who may not have the opportunity to celebrate as richly without outside support.
In doing so, Lamternshtick not only facilitates the distribution of Chanukah supplies but also fosters a sense of community and connection among participants. Families are encouraged to set aside one night of the holiday to share the light and joy of Chanukah with those in need, thereby enhancing the holiday experience for everyone involved.
The pop-up shop operates daily from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM throughout Chanukah. The location is conveniently situated at the entrance of the alleyway at Raskin’s Fish, allowing easy access for families wishing to partake in the initiative. Children visiting the site are also rewarded with ice cream coupons, adding a festive touch to their experience.
As Lamternshtick continues to gather momentum, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Chanukah—where the collective efforts of a community can illuminate the lives of many, ensuring that the holiday’s message of light and hope shines brightly for everyone.
