‘Generous Endowment Secures Musical Excellence for Future Generations for Grand Rapids Symphonic Band’

Endowment from David and Stephanie Dorner Elevates Grand Rapids Symphonic Band

The Grand Rapids Symphonic Band (GRSB) received a generous gift in March from David and Stephanie Dorner, which was added to the GRSB Endowment Fund. This significant contribution is intended to support the ongoing operation of the band and ensure its excellence for years to come.

David Dorner, founder and chairman of DornerWorks, a leading engineering solutions provider, has been a longstanding member of the GRSB board and saxophone section. He expressed his commitment to the organization by stating, “I have enjoyed performing with the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band for over three decades. I believe in the power of music to rejuvenate the mind and spirit, which is why I chose to make this substantial contribution to the endowment fund.”

Founded in 1978, the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band is a prominent adult community band that promotes musical excellence, encourages lifelong participation in instrumental music, and enriches cultural life in the greater Grand Rapids area.

Dr. Albert Harrison, the current board president, expressed his enthusiasm for the endowment gift, highlighting the opportunities it will provide for the band to continue its mission of musical performance, educational outreach, and artistic excellence.

With 65 members, including current and retired music teachers and other professionals, the GRSB performs five concerts annually and participates in various conferences and festivals. The band also hosts a solo competition for high school musicians in Michigan, offering a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the ensemble.

Barry D. Martin, the Artistic Conductor/Music Director of the band, expressed gratitude to David and Stephanie Dorner for their longstanding support. The generous gift will contribute to the financial stability of the organization and ensure its continued success.

The Grand Rapids Symphonic Band will hold its season finale concert, titled Viva La Musica!, on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Grandville High School Auditorium. The program will feature Latin-inspired music, including works by Clifton Williams, Aaron Copland, and Alfred Reed.
