Maui County Department of Housing Announces Application Period for Affordable Housing Projects
The County of Maui Department of Housing has officially opened the application process for affordable housing projects seeking funding from the Affordable Housing Fund for the Fiscal Year 2027. This initiative is a critical effort aimed at addressing the pressing housing needs of families in Maui County, specifically targeting those earning 140% or less of the county’s median family income.
The county invites a diverse range of applicants to submit proposals, including public agencies, private nonprofit organizations, community land trusts, and private for-profit entities. This inclusive approach is designed to foster collaboration among various stakeholders while tackling the affordable housing crisis that continues to affect the region.
Key to the success of these applications is project readiness, which encompasses critical factors such as site control and completion of all necessary environmental reviews. Proposals will be rigorously evaluated on these criteria, with additional points awarded to those projects that prioritize essential off-site infrastructure requirements. Moreover, preference will be given to proposals that aim to serve households earning between 81% and 140% of the Area Median Income and those that propose developments on county-owned land.
Last fiscal year, the Affordable Housing Fund made significant strides in addressing the housing shortage, awarding a total of .6 million to 15 projects. These projects are expected to produce over 1,000 new affordable housing units across Maui County, demonstrating the county’s commitment to enhancing housing accessibility for its residents.
Prospective applicants can obtain application materials starting September 19, 2025, at the County Housing Programs Division, located at 2065 Main St., Suite 108, Wailuku. The application materials will also be available on the department’s official website County of Maui Housing. All applications, regardless of submission method—be it hand-delivered, mailed, or submitted via email—must be received by the County Housing Programs Division by 4 p.m. HST on October 20, 2025.
The Affordable Housing Fund was established in accordance with Chapter 3.35 of the Maui County Code to provide vital financial resources for affordable housing solutions designated for income-eligible residents. Eligible projects may include the rehabilitation of existing structures, the purchase of land, as well as planning, design, and construction of new housing.
