Sherman, Texas: Promoting Breast Cancer Awareness Through Early Detection During October
As October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, medical professionals emphasize the critical importance of early detection in improving treatment outcomes for breast cancer patients. In Sherman, Texas, the AHS Sherman Medical Center has been home to the region’s only dedicated women’s imaging center since its launch nearly a year ago. Center manager Rebkah Clement highlights the significance of this facility, which has quickly become an essential resource for local residents in need of mammograms and other breast health services. “Prior to the opening of our center, patients often faced challenges in finding accessible places for their mammography needs,” Clement recounts.
The imaging center is accredited by the American College of Radiology and offers a comprehensive suite of services tailored to meet varied diagnostic needs. Patients can access screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and bone density tests— all conducted by trained professionals within a comfortable environment. Notably, the facility also caters to men, acknowledging that they too can develop breast cancer, despite the common perception that it primarily affects women.
Advancements in mammography technology have significantly transformed the patient experience. Clement explains how modern machines, particularly those from Hologic, utilize a fast paddle design that adapts to different breast shapes. This innovation not only minimizes discomfort during the procedure but also enhances the quality of imaging. The transition from 2D to 3D mammography is especially noteworthy, allowing for improved visualization of dense breast tissue, which can often obscure potential issues in traditional imaging.
Clement emphasizes the importance of overcoming reservations about screenings: “Make sure that you have your screening mammogram. I understand there may be apprehensions, but exploring your healthcare options is essential for your well-being. You must take care of yourself to effectively care for others.”
To support community awareness and education, the AHS Sherman Medical Center is hosting an upcoming event titled ‘Brake for Breakfast Friday.’ Local residents are invited to learn more about the services offered by the imaging center, with opportunities to schedule mammograms on-site while enjoying a complimentary hot meal.
