Penn State Extension Launches Kinship Café: A Supportive Resource for Kinship Caregivers
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Kinship caregivers, those who provide parental care for children of family members or close friends, often navigate a myriad of unique challenges. Recognizing these complexities, Penn State Extension has introduced the Kinship Café, a series of monthly live webinars aimed at supporting these caregivers and fostering community connections. The next session is scheduled for May 21, running from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Kinship care is defined as the arrangement in which relatives—such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, or close family friends—step in to care for children when their biological parents are unable to fulfill their parental responsibilities. This caregiving model is common in the United States, as many families face situations that necessitate alternative caregiving arrangements, including financial hardships, health issues, or other personal challenges.
The Kinship Café serves as a welcoming environment, designed for kinship caregivers to share experiences and access valuable resources. The program employs the “Caring for Our Kin” curriculum, developed through a collaborative effort with West Virginia University Extension. This curriculum addresses critical themes relevant to kinship care, including the emotional and logistical challenges that caregivers often face, as well as the dynamics within blended families that can arise from kinship arrangements.
Each session of Kinship Café will facilitate discussions focused on the various aspects of caregiving, encompassing family dynamics, challenges unique to kinship relationships, and strategies to promote the best interests of the children involved. In addition to peer support, participants will learn about community resources available to assist them in their caregiving roles.
While participation in the webinars is free of charge, prospective attendees are required to register by 7 p.m. on the day of each webinar to secure an access link, as sessions will not be recorded for later viewing. This stipulation ensures a more interactive and engaging environment, allowing caregivers to actively participate in discussions.
