Home Run Inn Celebrates Century Mark with Community Pizza Donation Initiative
After reaching the remarkable milestone of 100 years in business, Home Run Inn, a family-owned pizzeria based in Chicago, has exemplified its commitment to community engagement through an annual philanthropic effort. On Tuesday, the establishment partnered with the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services to deliver over 5,000 frozen pizzas to more than 30 local homeless shelters, marking its third consecutive year for this generous program, aptly named “Miracle on 31st Street.”
“We believe that one of our core values is giving back to the communities that have supported us throughout the years,” stated Gina Perrino Bolger, who serves as a senior vice president at Home Run Inn and is part of its fourth generation of family leadership. “The City of Chicago has nurtured us for over a century, and these efforts are a small token of our gratitude.”
The event took place at Home Run Inn’s original location on West 31st Street in Little Village, where the atmosphere was festive. Vehicles lined up to collect batches of frozen pizzas, with each case containing 12 pizzas, ready to serve those in need. To enhance the holiday spirit, performers from The Caroling Connection entertained attendees, adding to the communal cheer as they awaited their turn.
Among the beneficiaries of this effort were residents at North Side Housing and Supportive Services, a new shelter situated at 7464 N. Clark Street in Rogers Park. Shelter manager Kecya Thurman emphasized the significance of the donation, noting, “Since our kitchen just opened, we can provide pizzas for our residents’ meals. They were thrilled to learn pizza would be available.”
Brandie V. Knazze, commissioner for the Family and Support Services department, stressed the importance of local businesses’ involvement in supporting shelters, stating, “The generosity displayed by companies like Home Run Inn reinforces the love and care within our community, providing critical resources during challenging times.”
LaDonna Kelly, who was collecting pizzas for the Primo Center for Women and Children, echoed similar sentiments. She explained that the donation arrives at a crucial time as they experience an influx of new residents in response to the decreasing temperatures during the winter months. The availability of frozen pizzas serves as an accessible food option, particularly for families arriving late at night when preparing a full meal may not be feasible.
The resounding positive feedback from both shelter managers and residents affirms Home Run Inn’s ongoing commitment to this initiative. Bolger reflected on the significance of the event, commenting, “We strive to bring smiles to faces in our community. It is indeed a miracle that we have flourished for 100 years and can continue contributing to the community that has supported us so faithfully.”
