Million Secured for Land and Roofing Enhancements in Orange and Osceola Habitats

Orange County Approves Funding for Habitat for Humanity’s Expansion Efforts

Orlando, Florida – The Orange County Board of Commissioners has recently approved a significant .5 million agreement aimed at advancing the mission of Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando and Osceola County. This funding will facilitate the acquisition of land necessary for the construction of affordable single-family homes tailored specifically for low-to-moderate-income families. This initiative reflects the county’s ongoing commitment to alleviating housing challenges in fast-growing areas.

The allocated funds, sourced from the county’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund, are projected to enable Habitat Orlando and Osceola to build between 25 to 35 homes. Areas targeted for development include Holden Heights, Parramore, and east Orange County, which are regions experiencing increasing demand for affordable housing due to rising living costs.

Lucie Ghioto, the group’s growth management officer, emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that in a climate of escalating housing prices, the accessibility of affordable land poses a significant challenge. “Our objective is to serve as many people through affordable home ownership as possible. To do that, we must get creative, and this funding will allow us to continue exploring innovative solutions,” Ghioto remarked.

The need for affordable housing in Orange County has become increasingly critical, as many families struggle to maintain stability in the face of economic pressures. Angela Steward, a recent homeowner supported by Habitat Orlando and Osceola, shared her personal experience: “When you’re living paycheck to paycheck in this economy, you’re one paycheck away from being in your car. So, I’m very grateful and humble for this opportunity.”

In addition to the land acquisition, commissioners also authorized an extra .5 million intended for the replacement of roofs on 80 existing homes within the Habitat program. This initiative is particularly beneficial for homeowners in unincorporated Orange County, as the roof replacements will be provided at no cost to them. This dual approach not only expands the availability of new homes but also enhances living conditions for families already participating in the program.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando and Osceola County continues to be a vital resource for the community, having successfully sold 18 homes this year alone, with an additional 16 homes in the pipeline. In the last fiscal year, the organization engaged over 2,300 individuals through its various programs, underlining its comprehensive impact on the region’s housing landscape. The recent funding endorsement by the Orange County Board of Commissioners signifies a collaborative effort towards fostering sustainable and affordable housing solutions amidst growing socio-economic challenges.
