Gateway at the Green: A Milestone in Affordable Housing Opens in Greenville
Greenville, SC – The Gateway at the Green, a new 72-unit all-affordable apartment complex, officially opened its doors today, marking a significant achievement in addressing housing needs in the region. Remarkably, the development has secured full occupancy even before its inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony, underscoring the urgent demand for affordable housing options in the Greenville area.
Located strategically on Webb Road, the complex offers convenient access to various local amenities. “We knew this would be a really convenient workforce location,” stated Bryan Brown, President and CEO of the Greenville Housing Fund. The site is adjacent to significant business corridors along Mall Connector, Congaree, and Woodruff Roads, and is within close proximity to the Patewood medical campuses, as well as the upcoming cluster of public services from the City of Greenville, Greenville County, and the State of South Carolina on Halton Road.
One of the most compelling features of Gateway at the Green is its commitment to affordability. Every unit is designed for families and individuals earning less than 60% of the area median income (AMI). Notably, 13 units are specifically allocated for renters earning between 20-30% of the AMI. For instance, a single working individual earning approximately ,500 annually can afford a one-bedroom apartment in this community, which directly addresses the housing challenges faced by low-income residents.
“The Greenville Housing Fund is focused on making strategic investments to meet the deepest affordability needs in our community,” Brown emphasized. He highlighted the collaboration with The Gateway Companies, a Birmingham, Alabama-based developer, SC Housing, and the City of Greenville, ensuring a broad approach to serve working families and individuals, including those on minimum wage. “Gateway at the Green is also just a really beautiful, well-designed site,” Brown added, reinforcing the project’s aesthetic appeal.
The development features three-story buildings housing a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments set within a wooded landscape that boasts naturalized landscaping and ample parking. The complex not only prioritizes affordability but also incorporates high energy-efficiency standards. Each unit is equipped with Energy Star appliances and has achieved EarthCraft MultiFamily Certification, a testament to its sustainable building practices.
Residents of Gateway at the Green will have access to a range of amenities, including a central clubhouse, playground, laundry facilities, a computer lab, and a fitness room, fostering a sense of community among tenants. Additionally, GreenLink Transit connections are conveniently located nearby, enhancing mobility for residents.
At the opening ceremony, Veretta Lindsay, a member of the Greenville Housing Fund Board of Directors, concluded her address with a poignant quote from Coretta Scott King. “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members,” she remarked, encapsulating the spirit of the new development and welcoming residents with enthusiasm.
