Community Event Highlights SENCOTEN Language and Indigenous Heritage at Limekiln State Park
On July 24, 2023, Limekiln State Park will host a significant cultural event from 5 p.m. until sunset, aiming to celebrate and revitalize the SENCOTEN language and the rich history of the WSÁNEĆ people. The gathering promises to be an enriching experience that emphasizes the profound connections between language, land, and heritage.
The event will feature esteemed WSÁNEĆ Elders, who will share compelling stories rooted in the shared experiences of indigenous families and their enduring ties to the land. These narratives will be delivered in SENĆOŦEN and English, allowing attendees to appreciate the linguistic diversity and cultural significance of the SENCOTEN language. The importance of this gathering lies not only in the storytelling but also in the recognition of how the land remembers its history, and how the language continues to thrive despite past challenges.
The evening’s schedule includes a variety of activities designed to engage the community. At 7 p.m., attendees will be treated to an evocative storytelling session accompanied by performances from the Protectors of the Salish Sea, featuring flute and drum music. In addition to traditional storytelling, a lineup of special musical guests will contribute to the atmosphere of celebration and reflection.
At 8 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to witness stunning lighthouse fly-by photographs taken from the air, highlighting the natural beauty of Limekiln State Park and its surroundings. Such visual storytelling serves as a reminder of the landscapes that hold significance for the WSÁNEĆ people.
Throughout the evening, event organizers will provide interactive booths aimed at fostering cultural understanding. The POLS Culture Booth will focus on the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge about the land and its resources, particularly emphasizing sustainable practices related to seal preservation. Meanwhile, the Alchemy Arts Booth will offer a hands-on experience, allowing attendees to create their own wearable Salish art, a project led by local artists KAELWELTEN and Charlie Bloomfield.
This gathering represents an essential opportunity for community members and visitors alike to connect with the rich cultural tapestry of the WSÁNEĆ people and gain a deeper appreciation for the revitalization efforts surrounding the SENCOTEN language. Whether through learning, artistic expression, or shared storytelling, participants will leave the event with a greater understanding of the enduring legacy of indigenous communities in the region.
Such initiatives play a crucial role in promoting cultural awareness and fostering a sense of solidarity among both indigenous and non-indigenous community members, thus enriching the local heritage narrative. The event underscores the significance of maintaining and celebrating cultural identities in a rapidly changing world.
