Five Washington Colleges Awarded K for Childcare Support for Aerospace Students

Spokane Community College Among Five Institutions Awarded Childcare Funding for Aerospace Students

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Spokane Community College is set to play a pivotal role in enhancing educational opportunities for aerospace students after recently being selected as one of five Washington colleges to receive funding aimed at supporting childcare needs. The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) announced that the initiative, which allocates a total of 0,000, will provide ,000 specifically for use by these institutions to improve student outcomes.

The WSBCTC is collaborating with Aerospace Career Enhancement (ACE) and the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) to ensure that this funding is effectively utilized to assist students who are both parents and pursuing degrees in aerospace or related fields. The initiative highlights a recognition of the unique challenges faced by parenting students, who often experience significant barriers to completing their education due to childcare responsibilities.

Jennifer Dellinger, a policy associate for student support programs at the State Board, emphasized the critical nature of this funding. “We know childcare is a major barrier to education, and not just for prospective students but for the retention and persistence of current students,” she explained. The allocation is designed not only to aid new enrollees but also to help maintain the academic journey of existing students who may otherwise leave their programs due to childcare issues.

The funding will be distributed at the rate of ,000 per year for students enrolled in programs related to aerospace. This financial assistance is intended to be integrated into broader student support services at participating colleges. In addition to Spokane Community College, other institutions benefiting from this initiative include Bellingham Technical College, Big Bend Community College, Everett Community College, and Renton Technical College.

With the distribution of funds slated for the Fiscal Year 2026, these colleges are encouraged to utilize the resources to create or enhance childcare programs, thus fostering an environment where student-parents can thrive academically without the added stress of childcare costs.

As the need for skilled workers in the aerospace industry continues to grow, initiatives like these play a crucial role in ensuring that individuals with child-rearing responsibilities have access to the necessary resources to succeed in their educational pursuits. By addressing childcare needs, Washington state institutions are setting a precedent for supporting diverse student demographics and enhancing workforce development in critical sectors.
