NAMI Blair County to Offer Comprehensive Mental Health Programs for Community Support
NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Blair County is poised to enhance the mental health landscape of the community with a series of upcoming educational programs designed to empower individuals and families affected by mental health issues. These courses aim not only to provide essential knowledge but also foster a supportive environment for attendees.
Course Offerings
The NAMI Basics program is a no-cost, six-week course aimed at parents, caregivers, and other family members of youth aged 22 or younger who are experiencing mental health symptoms. Conducted by trained facilitators with personal experience in navigating these challenges, the course delivers critical information regarding mental health and encourages the development of a robust support network. Sessions will be held in a hybrid format—both in-person and online—on October 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. Interested individuals can register at NAMI Basics Registration.
Another significant offering is the Peer-to-Peer program, which provides an eight-week educational experience tailored for adults living with mental health conditions. This program focuses on self-understanding and recovery. Participants will learn to respect and support others with mental health challenges while gaining access to valuable resources. The Peer-to-Peer course is currently in progress, with sessions occurring online and in person from 1 to 3 p.m. on October 21. Registration is available at Peer-to-Peer Registration.
For family members of individuals grappling with mental illness, the Family-to-Family program offers a free, eight-week online gathering where participants can connect, share experiences, and acquire knowledge about mental health. This initiative provides a safe space for families to learn and derive comfort from one another. The next session will take place on November 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., and can be accessed by registering at Family-to-Family Registration.
Moreover, the In Our Own Voice presentation invites attendees to hear firsthand accounts of resilience from individuals in mental health recovery. Tailored for audiences from middle school age and older, this in-person event seeks to promote open dialogue surrounding mental health, aiming to combat stigma and inspire hope amongst community members. Scheduled for November 6 at 6 p.m. at the Altoona Area Public Library, this event encourages audience engagement through questions and discussions. Registration is available at In Our Own Voice Registration.
