Free Childbirth Classes Offered by AR Gould

Northern Light AR Gould Hospital Launches Free Childbirth Classes for Aroostook County Families

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Anticipating the arrival of a child is often a blend of excitement and anxiety for expectant parents. To support families within Aroostook County in this transformative journey, Northern Light AR Gould Hospital is launching complimentary in-person childbirth classes. Set to commence in October, these classes aim to provide parents-to-be with essential information and resources necessary for a safe and informed delivery experience.

The curriculum for these childbirth classes will encompass key topics such as pregnancy, labor support techniques, newborn care, and breastfeeding practices. In addition to the educational segments, participants will have the unique opportunity to take a guided tour of the hospital’s Women & Children’s inpatient unit, familiarizing them with the environment where they will welcome their new arrivals.

Jayme Hovey, a registered nurse in the Women’s & Children’s Inpatient Unit at AR Gould, emphasized the importance of education in alleviating the fears that accompany childbirth, particularly for first-time parents. “Michelle and I are committed to re-establishing community education on the childbirth process,” stated Hovey. “We aim to encourage both parents and their support systems to engage in this process, recognizing that support persons play a critical role during delivery.”

Midwife Michelle Medvedoff highlighted the necessity of these classes in comparison to standard prenatal visits. “During a typical visit, patients only receive about 20 minutes of education, which is often insufficient,” she explained. “Our childbirth classes, running from 9 AM to 3 PM, will provide an extended platform for expectant parents and their support networks to interact, learn about labor signs, delivery expectations, postpartum experiences, and tour the labor and delivery unit.”

These classes will be held quarterly, specifically designed for couples whose expectant mothers are at least 24 weeks along in their pregnancies. Medvedoff stressed that such educational opportunities are vital, especially in rural regions where resources might be limited. “People often have guides for everyday tools, such as microwaves and vehicles, yet comprehensive information on childbirth can be scarce. These classes aim to empower local families with knowledge and confidence to navigate the unpredictability of childbirth.”

This initiative also comes at a pivotal moment for families traveling from Houlton, as the recent closure of Houlton Regional Hospital’s Labor and Delivery Unit has prompted many expectant parents to seek alternative facilities. Hovey noted that familiarization with AR Gould’s offerings will provide reassurance to families who may be accustomed to delivering at the now-closed unit.

Whether welcoming a first child or adding to a growing family, AR Gould’s free childbirth classes represent an invaluable resource for residents of Aroostook County. To obtain further information or to reserve a spot in one of the classes, prospective participants are encouraged to contact Northern Light OB/GYN in Presque Isle at (207) 768-5944.

These classes not only aim to educate but also to build a supportive community around childbirth, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to enhancing family-centered care.
