Harmonizing Structure and Softness in a Bay Area Residence

A Contemporary Masterpiece in Burlingame: Harmonizing Form and Function

Nestled in the picturesque community of Burlingame, California, this newly constructed residence represents an exemplary fusion of modern design and personal expression. Burlingame is a coveted enclave within the Bay Area, revered for its scenic beauty, lush trees, and a family-friendly atmosphere. According to interior designer Natalia Lerman, the home was conceived for a family of four seeking a sanctuary that encapsulates their lifestyle and cherished memories. The objective was clear: to create a tranquil, organized environment that exudes warmth and creativity.

At the heart of this residence is the kitchen, which Lerman describes as the “soul” of the home. Designed to be both functional and inviting, the kitchen features a central curved island that serves as a gathering point for family and friends. The island, which is ingeniously supported by concealed steel, maintains an airy feel despite its robust stone surface. The space is elegantly accented by custom sculptural vases from Kris Bez Studio in Portugal, which introduce an artistic quality and balance to the environment.

Lerman prioritized open shelving in the kitchen to facilitate the display of personal artifacts, such as cherished ceramics, family photographs, and cookbooks. Limestone shelves from Phenix Marble Company enable the family to showcase meaningful objects, while concealed storage solutions ensure the kitchen remains orderly and adaptable. Complementing this design, a handcrafted ceramic triptych by Heit Ceramics and a minimalist wall sconce by In Common With enhance the room’s aesthetic.

The curvature motif continues seamlessly into the living and dining areas, where the design cleverly integrates cabinetry and ceiling elements. This architectural feature not only enhances connectivity among the various spaces but also conceals essential ventilation. “The cabinetry was tailored to the family’s specifications, comprising two elongated floating units paired with side shelving to maintain a sculptural appearance,” Lerman explains. A striking artwork from artist Alex Miretskiy serves as an anchor, framed by elegant sconces crafted by Allied Maker in bleached walnut.

Despite the challenges posed by the home’s open floor plan, Lerman adeptly crafted a harmonious flow among the entryway, living and dining areas, kitchen, powder room, and storage spaces. Each zone transitions naturally, ensuring clarity and simplicity throughout the layout.

Integrating a robust HVAC system without compromising the visual design proved another hurdle for the project. The continuous curved ceiling design not only contributes to an airy ambiance but also serves as an effective solution for concealing necessary ventilation. Lerman reflects that the homeowners embraced a philosophy of “less is more,” allowing for intentional design choices that complemented the collaborative vision of her studio.

Ultimately, the residence stands as a testament to the art of balance, merging the pillars of architecture and intimacy, structure and softness, precision and warmth. Each detail has been meticulously designed to create a home that is not only grounded and comfortable but also vibrant and alive.
