Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital Unveils Pediatric Ambulance Designed for Young Patients
FAIRFAX, Va. — In an innovative move to improve pediatric care, Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital has introduced a state-of-the-art pediatric ambulance aimed at providing a comfortable and age-appropriate transportation experience for young patients, from infants to teenagers. This new addition was officially unveiled on Wednesday morning in Fairfax, Virginia, and represents a significant advancement in the approach to pediatric emergency medical services.
During an exclusive tour for 7News, Health and Wellness Reporter Victoria Sanchez explored the features of this specialized transport unit. The introduction of a bright blue and pink ambulance reflects a commitment to creating a less intimidating environment for children in emergency situations. “I hope they see us as comfort when we’re arriving,” shared Talia Skinner, a pediatric critical care nurse at Inova Fairfax, highlighting the ambulance’s role in alleviating anxiety associated with medical emergencies for young patients.
The ambulance, designed to act as a “mobile ICU on wheels,” is equipped with advanced pediatric-specific medical equipment essential for handling emergencies involving infants and children. Paramedic Morgan Parr emphasized the ambulance’s capabilities, stating, “We are equipped to manage critical care needs while en route to the hospital.” This preparedness is particularly crucial for transporting high-risk patients, including premature infants who may weigh as little as fifteen ounces and can be the size of a dollar bill, as described by Tracy Rickard, a neonatal nurse practitioner at the hospital.
Beyond its medical functions, the ambulance is intentionally decorated to engage young patients. The exterior is adorned with playful designs, while the interior features comforting elements such as iPads pre-loaded with popular children’s shows like “Bluey.” This thoughtful design serves to divert children’s attention during transport and lessen their stress. “Our team decorated with stars and planets, creating a soothing atmosphere. We even have the option to dim our lights to create a calming effect,” Skinner added.
The incorporation of these pediatric-friendly features underscores a broader trend in healthcare towards more specialized and compassionate care for children, particularly during emergencies. The launch of this pediatric ambulance marks an important step in enhancing the quality of care provided by Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital, ensuring that young patients receive not only optimal medical attention but also a supportive environment during their transport to the hospital.
